ROCHELE, N.Y. — A new report shows how to calculate lead times for your newsroom.
The newsroom is a big part of your business and it’s important to know what to expect.
Here are some things to know.
— What are lead times?
Lead times are the number of hours the newspaper has to deliver news for each of its three-day print editions.
The more stories the newspaper carries in its three days, the longer lead times are expected to be.
ROLLING STONES, Mich.
— Lead times can vary widely depending on the size and size of the business, the type of news and the type and content of the story.
ROYAL CANBERRA, Calif.
— In general, newspapers have a longer lead time in the fall than in the spring.
— Newspapers typically have longer lead periods than newspapers have longer print runs.
Some states have longer leads than others.
In New York, a 10-day lead is 15% longer than in Colorado.
In Pennsylvania, it’s 25%.
In New Jersey, it is 30%.
In Florida, it will be 40%.
In Michigan, it’ll be 30%.
If you’re doing a lot of travel, you may be able to get by with shorter lead times.
ROOSEVELT, N, N., June 14, 2018 — A recent report from the National Association of Newspaper Publishers (NANP) found that newspaper readers are typically expected to wait about 30 minutes for a full-page story to be published in the paper.
The lead time for a two-page feature article is about 20 minutes.
A one-page article, with only the headline and photos, takes a little longer.
A four-page featured article takes about 45 minutes.
The average lead time is 15 minutes, or one-third the time of the average daily newspaper.
There are exceptions to this.
For example, a feature article in the New York Times can be published within about 30 seconds, but a feature story in the Seattle Times takes about 10 minutes.
There may be other factors at play.
In the case of feature articles, for example, if a story is about a specific issue, it may take longer for readers to understand what the issue is.
In fact, the lead time can vary.
Some features, like the news, feature stories, feature photography, and features in the print edition, may take more than an hour to produce.
