Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is still in the post.
He has been in office since July 2013, and his term expires in 2019.
What’s happened since then?
Erdogan has overseen a sweeping crackdown on the country’s largely Kurdish minority, which includes tens of thousands of Kurds in Istanbul.
He blames them for orchestrating a coup attempt in July 2016, and has repeatedly warned that he will use force against them should they continue to resist.
How does Turkey’s democracy work?
Erdogan’s rule has been marked by widespread public discontent.
He says his reforms have led to a decline in crime and the spread of corruption.
What happens now?
Turkey has been rocked by a series of deadly bombings, and the country is reeling from a series at the hands of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group.
More than 30 people were killed in an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Istanbul on Tuesday, according to Turkish officials.
On Saturday, a suicide bomber blew himself up near a courthouse in Istanbul, killing two Turkish security personnel.
Turkey is on edge over the attack, which has prompted the country to declare a state of emergency.
How did the U,S.
and other countries react to the coup attempt?
The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved a resolution on Friday that calls for a cease-fire and a speedy end to violence in Turkey.
But it did not explicitly endorse Erdogan’s crackdown.
It also rejected Erdogan’s call for Turkey to leave the U of A, saying that it was “inappropriate” for the university to “continue with its academic activities.”
